Editorial NSAA Special 2016

With this edition of our NSAA Special, we would like to give our readers in the USA and Canada an insight into subjects that are of current importance for the industry in Austria, namely sustainability and summer on the mountain.

Today, ski resorts are increasingly interested in making a positive impression with sustainable solutions, and at the same time more and more ropeway operators are working on strategies to attract more visitors to the mountain not only in winter but also in summer. To provide readers with a meaningful overview of the two subjects, we have taken articles from two recognized experts in the field for this issue of ISR.

“How sustainable should mountain tourism be?” This question is addressed by Ulrike Pröbstl of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, who has done detailed field work on the subject and come to conclusions that merit the attention of the ropeway industry worldwide.

In the second article – “Summer on the mountain: asset or liability?” – Klaus Grabler, General Manager of Manova GmbH, considers whether the summer can be turned into an asset as a second line of business for mountain ropeway operators.

Perhaps the articles can stimulate a dialog on the two subjects between American and Austrian ski resort managers. If you have any comments or suggestions, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Needless to say, this edition of ISR also includes useful information on the excellent products and services available from suppliers to the ski resort industry, including ropeway installations, access management systems and snow groomers for perfect pistes.

I should also like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to our new website, which is written in no fewer then seven languages, and inform you that the complete current edition of ISR is also available online in an eBook version at

Wishing you enjoyable reading and looking forward to receiving lots of feedback,

Christian Amtmann
