Fifteen successful years of DirectDrive

The fact that the DirectDrive is a gearless system offers a number of significant advantages. Leitner's DirectDrive is now to be found on 55 ropeways in 22 countries.

Leitner's DirectDrive incorporates a synchronous motor that is directly linked to the bullwheel. It consists of three moving parts – the rotor and two bearings. In contrast to conventional planetary gear drive systems, no engine oil is required at all. Since the DirectDrive has fewer parts and runs at a lower speed, wear and the risk of a breakdown are greatly reduced.

In addition to superior reliability, another striking feature of the DirectDrive is the lower noise levels. This modern drive system is ideally operated in combination with the LeitDrive frequency converter. The perfect match between the motor and the frequency converter guarantees a high degree of overall efficiency and a drive motor that is efficient in the full load range. Meaningful energy-efficient synergies are available through the use of waste heat from the cooling system to provide heating or hot water. Leitner's drive system has already been installed at a number of leading ski resorts, including Kitzbühel, Laax, Zermatt and – in the Czech Republic – Jasna and Špindlerův Mlýn (Tatry Mountain Resorts). In 2015 alone, 16 new installations were delivered with the DirectDrive. With its low noise emissions, the DirectDrive is also proving highly successful in urban environments, including Mexico City and Ankara.

Another big advantage of this drive system is that it is produced in-house. So customers benefit from the wealth of experience built up by Leitner's team of ropeway engineers over the past fifteen years when they go for the efficiency avaiable with the DirectDrive and LeitDrive combination.
