The November 14 opening of Sugar’s long awaited Summit Express – a detachable 6-seater chairlift manufactured by Doppelmayr – was attended by North Carolina Governor McCrory and Doppelmayr’s CEO Michael Doppelmayr. Gunther Jochl, owner and President of Sugar Mountain Resort, was correspondingly enthusiastic: “What an honor! To have the Governor and Mr. Doppelmayr here to celebrate the accomplishment of a long anticipated goal is exciting and brings great meaning to the efforts of my entire team.” The ribbon cutting ceremony can be viewed at www.skisugar.com/cams/.
The almost one-mile ride to Sugar Mountain’s 5,300 foot peak on the Summit Express, which offers padded seats, ample elbow room, comfortable footrests, and easy and gentle loading and unloading, takes a mere five minutes.
The Summit Express - with a rated capacity of 2,518 persons per hour - is yet another attraction at North Carolina’s largest snow-sports resort, which is noted for its excellent skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, tubing and snowshoeing facilities.
